The Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails is a 7-acre redevelopment within the Detroit Zoo that merges nature play, animal habitat, and stormwater design. Rooted in innovative water management the planning and site design for this project completely reconsidered the relationship with water allowing for healing and restoration and allowing for future evolution and advancement.
Completed 2026.
A 29-mile non-motorized transportation system linking neighborhoods across Detroit. Design segments included on-street connections that weave between park spaces, plazas, and off‑road trails. Key design work included segments that tie the greenway to the Gordie Howe International Bridge and to adjacent waterfront and neighborhood parks.
Design approaches prioritized equitable access, safety, and local identity. Temporary pilot measures—co-designed and built by local artists and community members—tested layout, materials, and placemaking strategies before permanent installation. These pilots demonstrated traffic-calming treatments, wayfinding elements, seating, public art, and bioswale prototypes that informed the final design.
